[edit] What is delicious?

delicious is social bookmarking.
In other words, it's bookmarking (saving your favorite sites) but with the added benefit of being able to access your bookmarks from anywhere and share them with anyone.

So, for example, you can check out my bookmarks at http://delicious.com/funksoup
and I've tagged all the bookmarks that have to do with participatory culture with a tag called 'participatoryculture' so that I can call up all my participatory culture-related bookmarks like this:
http://delicious.com/funksoup/participatoryculture

Similarly, I've tagged all my bookmarks that have to do with education with a tag called 'education' so I can call up all my education-related bookmarks like this:
http://delicious.com/funksoup/education

You can bookmark/save any site and then tag it with as many tags that you'd like, i.e., I might tag a site "education" and "virtual_worlds"
And you can do it pretty easily by either going to "Save a new bookmark" or by installing the delicious plugin which then gives you a super-easy to access button on your browser. The plugin will put a button your browser so when you want to bookmark a site all you have to do is click one button. Here are the browser plugins:
http://delicious.com/help/tools

You can even have your delicious bookmarks post to your Facebook account by adding that plugin:
https://secure.delicious.com/settings/bookmarks/facebook
(you can also save a bookmark and set it to 'private' so it doesn't show up publicly)

I also find it helpful to watch what others in the industry are bookmarking.
For example, Howard Rheingold's (author of Smart Mobs) bookmarks are here:
http://delicious.com/hrheingold

and danah boyd's (social media expert) bookmarks are here:
http://delicious.com/zephoria

To add someone to your network, go to their URL, i.e., http://delicious.com/funksoup/ or http://delicious.com/hrheingold etc. and then click the "Add to my Network" button. A message will display that says "Add [username] to your Network?" then click OK.

Sometimes I like to check out who other people are following, since they might have some interesting bookmarks too, so for example, you could look at whom Howard Rheingold is also following by going to
http://delicious.com/hrheingold and clicking "Network" which will then display his network of people on the right side, with the links they are saving in the main window.

Similarly, I can check out my own network of people by going to
http://delicious.com/funksoup and clicking "Network" - and in the main window it will display my network of people and their bookmarks.
very helpful when it comes to wanting to expand my research and seeing other people's research.

When you come across a link that you want to save, post it to your Delicious bookmarks.

Links that people in your network have posted show up under "Network". This way, we can share relevant links.

You can also post a link specifically to someone in your network by specifying whom in your network the link is for by entering their username in the "SEND" field (i.e., if you wanted to send me a link, in the SEND field, start typing "funksoup" and it will auto-complete. You can also put "for:funksoup" in the "TAGS" field and it will do the same thing). If you come across a link that you think is pertinent to the class, you can send it to me.

Here's a helpful guide on using delicious (though I think I've outlined it in a very detailed way already): Useful: A beginner’s guide to del.icio.us

One last thing, delicious.com used to be del.icio.us so when you see it referred to as delicious or del.icio.us -- it's the same thing.

Happy social bookmarking!
